Is Osaka University now called The University of Osaka?

Yes. The institution changed its official English name to The University of Osaka in April 2025. Older documents may still say Osaka University. Applicants should use the current official name and verify their faculty, campus, program language, and admission guide.

Do English taught programs in Japan require Japanese?

Some do not require Japanese for admission, but later curriculum, graduation, placements, or daily administration can differ. Are national universities cheaper than private universities in Japan?

Leading Universities in Japan for International Students

Japan's most visible universities are not interchangeable. They differ by national or private status, city, teaching language, undergraduate structure, research strengths, entrance examinations, and international program design.

This guide avoids a fixed ranking table. Rankings change annually, while a program's curriculum and eligibility determine whether you can actually study there.

The University of Tokyo

The University of Tokyo, or UTokyo, offers Japanese taught undergraduate degrees, selected English routes, graduate programs in English, university exchange, and short programs.

The most important 2026 update is that PEAK admissions end with fall 2026 enrollment. Applications for that final intake are closed. Future applicants should not follow an article that presents PEAK as an ongoing undergraduate route.

UTokyo's Global Science Course is an English undergraduate transfer program for students who have completed at least two years at a university outside Japan. USTEP exchange is limited to students nominated through partner universities.

Kyoto University

Kyoto University is a national research university with programs across humanities, science, engineering, medicine, agriculture, and other fields.

Its English degree page lists selected undergraduate and graduate options. Kyoto iUP is not a simple four-year English degree: it includes a preparatory period, English and Japanese study, and later specialized study mainly or exclusively in Japanese.

Applicants should distinguish fully English graduate programs, mixed-language undergraduate routes, and ordinary Japanese taught admission.

The University of Osaka

The official English name changed from Osaka University to The University of Osaka in April 2025. Current articles and applications should use the new name, while older transcripts or references may show the former name.

Tohoku University

Tohoku University is a national research university in Sendai, offering Japanese taught admission and international programs.

Japanese taught undergraduate applicants generally follow faculty-specific EJU, language, and examination requirements.

Best fit: students seeking Sendai and a research environment who are willing to verify the institution's program transition for their intake.

Waseda University

Waseda is a large private university in Tokyo with broad international admissions.

Its official 2026 page listed English undergraduate degree programs across six schools, including political science and economics, social sciences, international liberal studies, culture and media, and selected science and engineering fields. Japanese proficiency was not required for application to those English programs.

Each school has its own documents, tests, intake, and curriculum. Waseda's fees also differ from national university fee structures.

Best fit: students seeking a private Tokyo university with a defined English undergraduate route.

Keio University

Keio is a private university with campuses across the Tokyo and Kanagawa area. It offers Japanese taught degrees and selected English options.

Applicants should verify program continuity, campus, intake, curriculum, testing, and language on the responsible faculty page. Do not assume every subject at Keio has an English degree route because the university has international courses.

Best fit: students whose academic plan matches a specific faculty and private-university budget.

Sophia University

Sophia is a private university in central Tokyo with long-standing international and language-focused education. Selected undergraduate and graduate programs use English, while other degrees require Japanese.

The Faculty of Liberal Arts and other English options should be checked through the current admissions guide. Program labels, majors, and language requirements can change.

Best fit: students seeking a more compact Tokyo campus and a clearly identified English or Japanese program.

National versus private

National universities often use government-linked tuition structures, but admission fees, program charges, and future changes still require verification. Private universities set institution and school-specific fees.

National does not mean better, and private does not mean easier. Compare curriculum, class access, language, city, housing, scholarships, and career fit.

Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, or Sendai

Tokyo offers the widest urban network and a high housing burden. Kyoto combines a student city with heavy tourism in some areas. Osaka offers a large metropolitan region with different campus locations. Sendai provides a smaller urban setting and a different cost and climate profile.

Calculate the commute to the actual campus. A university name does not tell you where every faculty teaches.

English taught does not mean English only

Ask:

Are all required courses taught in English?
Which electives use Japanese?
What language is used for laboratories, placements, and thesis supervision?
Is Japanese required for graduation?
Can students take university Japanese courses?
What language is used in administration and career services?

A program may accept students without Japanese and still reward serious language learning.

Admission and timing

As of August 2026, many 2026 intakes are complete. Use the next intake guide when released. Typical documents can include academic records, standardized tests, EJU, JLPT, English proficiency, essays, recommendations, interviews, and authentication.
